The Pirates claimed former Marlins infielder Lewin Diaz off waivers Tuesday.

The Pittsburgh Pirates added another first baseman Tuesday, claiming Lewin Diaz off waivers from the Miami Marlins.

Diaz, 26, is a 6-foot-4, 217-pounder from the Dominican who has a .181/.227/.340 slash line with 13 home runs and 27 RBIs in 112 games over three major-league seasons.

Diaz entered the 2021 season ranked as the Marlins’ No. 6 prospect per MLB Pipeline. He has 16 career defensive runs saved and nine Outs Above Average. Last season, Diaz had 5 DRS while slashing .169/.224/.288 with four doubles, five homers and 11 RBIs in 58 games in three stints with the Marlins.

Diaz split last season between the Marlins and Triple-A Jacksonville, where he batted .252 with 19 home runs and 64 RBIs in 82 games.

To make room for Diaz on the 40-man roster, the Pirates designated infielder/outfielder Hoy Park for assignment.

Park, 26, slashed .216/.276/.373 with two doubles, two homers and six RBIs in 23 games with the Pirates last season. He was acquired from the New York Yankees, along with infielder/outfielder Diego Castillo, in the Clay Holmes trade in July 2021.
