Pirates farm report for Aug. 16, 2023: Nick Gonzales homers, collects game-winning hit for Indy

INDIANAPOLIS (Triple-A, 54-60) beat St. Paul (Twins), 4-3, when PH Mason Martin (.278) singled to lead off the ninth and scored when a single by 2B Nick Gonzales (.271) was misplayed by the left fielder for an error. Gonzales went 4 for 5 and hit his seventh homer. CF Ji Hwan Bae (.344) went 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs. DH Aaron Shackelford (.225) went 2 for 4 with a double. RHP Jared Jones (5.40) started and went 5.1 innings, allowing three runs on eight hits with two walks and nine strikeouts. RHP John O’Reilly earned the win, throwing 2.2 scoreless innings. RHP Hunter Stratton (4.41) pitched a scoreless ninth for his fourth save.

Next: Thursday at St. Paul (Twins), 8:07 p.m.

ALTOONA (Double-A, 51-56) fell 5-1 to Bowie (Orioles). RHP Justin Meis (4.95) of Bethel Park started and went four innings, giving up one run on two hits and two walks with five strikeouts. LHP Omar Cruz (1-4, 4.98) took the loss, allowing two runs on three hits in 2.2 innings. 2B Jackson Glenn (.271) went 2 for 4 with a run scored. LF Connor Scott (.208) went 2 for 3 with a double. CF Matt Gorski (.236) went 1 for 4 with a double and an RBI.

Next: Thursday at Bowie (Orioles), 6:35 p.m.

GREENSBORO (High-A, 57-50) was blasted by Bowling Green (Rays), 10-3. RHP Bubba Chandler (7-4, 5.27) started and took the loss, allowing five runs on four hits, including three homers. He walked four and struck out five. RHP Jack Carey (4.32) pitched two scoreless innings. LHP Julian Bosnic (9.82) allowed four runs on one hit and three walks in one-third of an inning. SS Jack Brannigan (.337) went 2 for 5. LF Luke Brown (.219) went 2 for 4 with two runs scored. 3B Brenden Dixon (.215) went 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI. 2B Termarr Johnson (.182) went 0 for 3 with a walk and two strikeouts.

Next: Thursday vs. Bowling Green (Rays), 6:30 p.m.

BRADENTON (Low-A, 62-46) and Lakeland (Tigers) were rained out. The game will be made up as apart of a doubleheader Thursday.
