The Pittsburgh Pirates made multiple roster moves to finalize their 26-man Opening Day roster, most notably by placing a pair of prominent players on the injured list.
The Pirates placed right-handed pitcher Jared Jones on the 15-day injured list with a ulnar collateral ligament sprain in his right elbow and first baseman Spencer Horwitz on the 10-day injured list while he recovers from surgery on his right wrist. Both are retroactive to March 24.
Jones was 6-8 with a 4.14 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 132 strikeouts in 121⅔ innings over 22 starts as a rookie for the Pirates last season. Horwitz was acquired from Cleveland after spending last season with Toronto.
They selected the contract of left-handed reliever Ryan Borucki, who spent the past two seasons with the Pirates but was a non-roster invitee to big league camp at spring training. Borucki went 2-0 with an 0.93 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, .143 batting average against, 14 strikeouts and five walks in 9⅔ innings over 10 appearances in Grapefruit League play.
To make room for Borucki on the 40-man roster, the Pirates designated right-handed reliever Peter Strzelecki for assignment. Strzelecki, acquired from Cleveland in the offseason, was 0-1 with a 7.00 ERA, 1.89 WHIP, .297 batting average against with 10 strikeouts and six walks in nine innings over as many appearances.
