The Pittsburgh Pirates sent minor-league right-handed pitcher Ricky DeVito to the Texas Rangers on Saturday as the player to be named to complete the trade for infielder-outfielder Mark Mathias.
The 6-foot-3, 195-pound DeVito was 3-6 with a 5.40 ERA and 1.53 WHIP in 70 innings over 35 appearances, including six starts, for High-A Greensboro last season. He averaged 11.6 strikeouts and 5.7 walks per nine innings and had 15 wild pitches.
DeVito, 24, was an eighth-round pick by the Atlanta Braves out of Seton Hall in 2019. He was acquired from the Braves, along with right-hander Bryse Wilson, as part of the return for closer Richard Rodriguez at the 2021 trade deadline. The Pirates traded Wilson to the Milwaukee Brewers this past January for cash considerations.
The right handed-hitting Mathias, 28, has a .256/.307/.462 slash line with six doubles, six home runs and 24 RBIs played in 46 career major-league games with the Milwaukee Brewers and Rangers. Mathias has played 10 games at first base, seven at second base, six in left field, four at first base, two at third base and one in center field while also serving as designated hitter in 17 games in his three-year major-league career.
