Of all the baseball stadiums in all the towns in all the world … PNC Park is among the best. Regularly.
Hold your head high, Pittsburgh. You’ve got one of the best Major League Baseball parks there is. And while the team that plays there has rarely been viable after about midseason over the past, er, decades, the park they play has always been a contender.
And with the latest improvements this season, the park could likely rise even higher.
USAToday’s latest rankings have the Buccos’ stadium ranked as the third best, calling it “brilliantly designed” and boasting “one of baseball’s most scenic backdrops. … It helps distract you from the bad Pirates baseball being played.” Touché, USAToday. Touché.
The publication ranks only San Francisco’s Oracle Park (at No. 2) and San Diego’s Petco Park (No. 1) higher.
Over at ListWire’s latest rankings, PNC Park is fourth, having us trailing Baltimore’s Camden Yards (No. 3), Chicago’s Wrigley Field (2) and Oracle Park (1). Their staff writes, “The Pirates don’t get many things right. But man, did they nail PNC Park. Try the pierogis and the chicken wings they sell by the bucketful.”
At ReviewTrackers, they use an algorithm that analyzed 130,000 baseball stadium reviews and 550,000 keywords and ranks the MLB parks into four categories: Food and Drink, Fan Experience, Family Experience, and Facility. Ranked 2nd overall, PNC Park tops both the Fan Experience and Family Experience categories. The park landed at No. 3 in the Facility category and 12th when it comes to Food and Drink.
“The high score for PNC Park isn’t really surprising. Fans generally rave about the stadium,” the site writes. “One reason is the view.
“Fans talk about the view at PNC 6 times more often than at the average stadium, and twice as often as the next highest stadium (AT&T Park). But even if you exclude discussion about the views, AT&T and PNC still come out on top for fan experience.”
When it comes to the family experience, ReviewTrackers points out the park’s “Kids Days” on Sunday from special kid friendly giveaways to allowing kids to run the bases after every the game.
They quote one Pittsburgh reviewer saying, “My family attends Pittsburgh Pirates games several times during the season. PNC Park is very well maintained and clean. … If you go at the right time, you could see a concert or fireworks after the game. On Mother’s Day I got to run the bases with my son. Fun! Let’s Go Bucs!”
And it’s not just Americans that think highly of PNC Park. The crew at the UK-based Franchise Sports puts the Pirates’ home at No. 6. (Six!?)
“With arguably the best view in baseball, PNC Park is one of the best MLB stadiums,” the site writes. “What makes the view so iconic is that the field faces the Allegheny River, downtown Pittsburgh, and the Roberto Clemente bridge.”
And lest you think that only modern parks make Pittsburgh worthwhile, sports site Yardbarker compiled a list of defunct MLB parks they miss most. No. 5? Forbes Field.
