Pirates fans will see something new at PNC Park for the home opener April 12 — starting at 4:12 p.m. to mirror the 4/12 date — against the Chicago Cubs.
In what the team is calling “the continued evolution of PNC Park,” there will be new social gathering spaces in the outfield area, concession and hospitality concepts and kids’ play areas.
“As we work hard to build our team on the field, we are also focused on the continued evolution of the experience at PNC Park,” said Pirates chairman Bob Nutting in a statement. “We need to ensure that PNC Park is a welcoming and fun place for every fan, build off what is best about PNC Park and improve the gameday experience to meet the changing needs of our fans.”
As the park enters its 22nd season, designer Janet Marie Smith explored ways to improve the ballpark experience.
A longtime executive with Major League Baseball teams, her previous projects include Camden Yards in Baltimore, Fenway Park in Boston and Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.
Fan habits have changed, and the way they experience ballparks has changed, Smith said in a statement. In response, designers have removed walls and barriers and some seats to create better views of the field.

“It was important to add something for every fan, including cool displays for baseball historians, play areas for kids, craft beer and new food concepts for friends to enjoy together,” Smith said.
No one from the Pirates’ organization was available to comment further.
Here are some of the enhancements:
The Bullpen – There is a new gathering space above the center-field bullpens that will include two rows of drink rails, seating and televisions.
Kids’ play areas – The kids’ play area in right field has been refreshed and expanded along the Riverwalk into center field. There are life-sized bobbleheads, a Lucky Climber shaped like a pirate ship, as well as an accessible kid’s play bridge inspired by the nearby Roberto Clemente Bridge.
The Landing – Located just above the center-field fence line, The Landing offers a view of the action on the field, the Roberto Clemente Bridge and Downtown. There are drink rails, tables and high-top seating.
New food concepts – The Pirates and Aramark have created new food items throughout the park.
The Patio – Located between the upper and lower bleacher seating areas in left field, The Patio has been widened.
Picnic Park – The Picnic Park will feature upgraded furnishings, enhanced lighting and landscaping. Throughout the park, there will be displays showcasing the history of the franchise. There will be retired numbers in the landscape and oversized baseballs.
