Keeping up with a growing trend in college basketball, Robert Morris will have 11 newcomers on its 16-man roster at the start of the 2022-23 season.
Nonetheless, coach Andy Toole will lean heavily on four returning starters.
One of them, graduate student Kahliel Spear, started all 32 games last season. Productive throughout the year, Spear was a third-team All-Horizon League selection after leading Robert Morris in scoring (an average of 14.7 points per game), rebounding (7.7), total blocks (35) and field goal percentage (188 of 341, 55.1%).
He also is the first RMU basketball player — male or female — named a CoSIDA Academic All-American (second team).
The other three returning starters are guards Enoch Cheeks and Michael Green III and forward Matt Mayers.
Cheeks also started all 32 games, averaging 9.2 points and 5.4 rebounds. His accomplishments also showed up in two other categories, leading RMU in steals (37) and finishing second in blocks (27).
Green III appeared in 29 games, with 24 starts and averaged 10.4 points, 3.3 assists and 2.3 rebounds.
Mayers converted 63.3% (76 for 120) of his attempts from the field, wit a 6.0-points per-game average and 4.4 rebounds.
Four of the 11 newcomers are transfers from another NCAA Division I school. They include forwards Kevin Martina (Sam Houston State) and Trey James (Iona) and guards Chris Ford (Davidson) and Josh Corbin (Winthrop). Corbin’s career resume includes 81 3-pointers.
Junior college transfer Jackson Last played the 2021-22 season at Salt Lake Community College.
The five freshmen are forwards Stephaun Walker of Washington D.C.; guards Ben Krystkowiak of San Diego and T.J. Wainwright of Los Angeles; and guard/forwards Nathan Frascone of Massillion, Ohio; and Cyril Arvanitis of Elberon, N.J.
Wainwright spent his prep season helping Monteverde Academy to a 30-5 record and the Florida Sun Basketball Conference national championship. He averaged 15.7 points and shot nearly 50% from the field.
Freshman guard Tanner O’Grady of Upper St. Clair will be a preferred walk-on this season.
