The 2019 Don Hansen NCAA Division II All-American team was announced on Monday, and Slippery Rock quarterback Roland Rivers III and coach Shawn Lutz were among the top honorees.

Rivers, who threw for 4,460 yards and 52 touchdowns this year, was named the Offensive Player of the Year, and Lutz was named the Co-Coach of the year with West Florida’s Pete Shinnick after the Rock made a trip to the NCAA Division II semifinals.

In his senior season at The Rock, Rivers put up quite the stat line. To go with his video game like passing numbers, Rivers also carried the ball 164 times for 700 yards and nine touchdowns. He threw for a season-high 436 yards and six touchdowns against Notre Dame (Ohio) in the NCAA Division II semifinals and also holds the SRU single-season records for total offense, passing yards, passing touchdowns and completions.

Rivers also was named the 2019 Harlon Hill Award winner, which is the NCAA Division II Player of the Year award.

In his fourth year as the head coach of Slippery Rock, Lutz led his team to the semifinals and also received PSAC West Coach of the Year honors for the second straight year. Slippery Rock’s season ended with a 58-15 loss to Minnesota State. But, up until that point, Slippery Rock was undefeated and finished the season by averaging 46.2 points and 647 yards per game.

Slippery Rock offensive tackle Chris Larsen also was named to the first-team offense. Junior receiver Henry Litwin and senior guard Ryan Podgorski were named to third-team offense, and senior linebacker Brad Zaffram was named to third-team defense.

Other PSAC players named to the NCAA Division II All-American teams were Cal (Pa.)’s Lamont McPhatter (second-team defense), IUP’s Jeff Arnold (third-team offense) and Damon Lloyd (third-team defense), Kutztown’s Jack Pilkerton (third-team offense) and Shepherd’s Keandre Boston (second-team offense).
