• The Pirates begin a seven-game homestand with three games against Cincinnati. So far this season, the Reds have had tough luck in extra innings. Seven clubs across MLB have yet to win a game in extras (including the Texas Rangers, who haven’t played extra innings yet). Among them, no team has lost more than Cincinnati, which is 0-5 in extras. Worse for the Reds, in those five extra-innings defeats, they have failed to score a run, including against the Chicago White Sox, who prevailed 5-1 in 10 innings May 13. Elly De La Cruz hit a solo homer in the ninth for the Reds’ only run, forcing extra innings, but Chicago plated four in the 10th to win.

• Brewers starter Brandon Woodruff continues to inch toward making his first big-league appearance since September 2023. Woodruff, 32, has been recovering from shoulder surgery since October of that year. He appeared to be getting closer to making his return, as Woodruff went on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Nashville. But he was pulled during a start May 11 as a result of right ankle tendinitis. A two-time All-Star (2019, 2021), Woodruff is 46-26 with a career 3.10 ERA in seven seasons with Milwaukee.
