Western Pa. spots to watch the USA-Netherlands World Cup match
World Cup fever has hit Western Pennsylvania.
After a tense match against Iran, team USA advanced out of the group stage of the World Cup thanks to a goal from American superstar and Pennsylvania native Christian Pulisic.
The win means that the Stars and Stripes will move on to the round of 16 and play the Netherlands on Saturday at 10 a.m.
In response, several bars, breweries, restaurants and venues in the Pittsburgh area are opening up early to showcase the match. The Netherlands is favored over the U.S., but that won’t stop Pittsburghers and Americans alike from cheering on team USA at their favorite spot.
Here are some spots around the region showcasing the USA-Netherlands match:
Archie’s, 2328 E Carson St., South Side — This popular sports bar will open at 9 a.m. for the big match, and it also appears the Tribune-Review sports columnist Mark Madden will be in attendance, according to a tweet Madden wrote on Thursday.
Bulldog Pub, 1818 Morningside Ave., Morningside — The unofficial soccer-watching hub of Pittsburgh, this neighborhood bar has the rowdiest fans and a great beer list. Expect it to be crowded for the USA-Netherlands match. The pub opens at 7 a.m. on Saturday for ample pregaming opportunities.
Cappy’s Cafe, 5431 Walnut St., Shadyside: Doors open at 10 a.m., and breakfast will be served.
City Works, 2 PPG Place, Pittsburgh (Market Square) — Doors open at 8:45 a.m.
Coach’s Bottleshop & Grille, 3105 Banksville Road, Pittsburgh — Coach’s is opening at 10 a.m., serving up Dutch Breakfast plates ( pancakes, eggs and bacon_ and 75 cents wings, along with $6 pitchers of Yuengling.
Cupka’s Cafe II, 2314 E Carson St. South Side — Doors open at 8 a.m. on Saturday.
D’s Six Pax & Dogz, 1118 S. Braddock Ave., Regent Square — The bar area will open for the match at 10 a.m. Food service and the restaurant opens at 11 a.m.
Dancing Gnome Beer, 1025 Main St., Sharpsburg — Come a bit early to this craft brewery known for its hazy beers and enjoy some breakfast burritos from Blue Sparrow food truck before the match. Dancing Gnome will open its taproom at 9:30 a.m. before the 10 a.m. kickoff.
Eleventh Hour Brewing Co., 3711 Charlotte St., Lawrenceville — This tucked-away brewery in Pittsburgh’s Lawrenceville neighborhood will be opening up a couple of hours early on Saturday for USA soccer fans. Check out Eleventh Hour’s social media for more details.
Forbes Tavern, 310 Forbes Ave., Downtown — The best soccer bar in Downtown Pittsburgh will be opening up early at 9 a.m. on Saturday to show the USA-Netherlands match. Kitchen will be slinging breakfast sandwiches and beer specials on offer.
Golden Age Beer Co., 337 E. 8th Ave., Homestead — Doors open at 10 a.m.with food service beginning at noon.
Grist House, 10 E Sherman St., Millvale — The brewery with a large patio will open early on Saturday at 9:45 a.m. for the team USA match. Food trucks arrive around noon.
James Cafe, 2550 Smallman St., Strip District — This coffee shop and restaurant is bullish on soccer and is streaming every World Cup match it can during its operating hours between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. until December 18.
Mario’s East Side Saloon, 5442 Walnut St., Shadyside — Doors open at 10 a.m.
Mike’s Beer Bar, 110 Federal St., North Side — Probably the best place to watch as many World Cup games as possible. The bar across from PNC Park is open at 8 a.m. during match days, including this Saturday for the USA-Netherlands match. Mike’s is also serving breakfast to hungry soccer fans.
Hofbrauhaus, 2705 S. Water St., South Side — This large venue serving German beer and fare has long been a hotbed of World Cup activity. The restaurant will be opening early at 10 a.m. on Saturday for the USA’s win or go home match against the Netherlands. Watch with a beer and some German music.
Leaning Cask, 850 Pittsburgh St., Springdale — This craft brewery has been packed with fans for USA games.
Live! Casino Pittsburgh, 5260 Route 30, Hempfield — A watch party will be held beginning at 10 a.m. in the casino’s Sports & Social Steel City bar and restaurant. Food and drink specials will be available.
Old Thunder Brewing, 340 Freeport Road, Blawnox — Doors open at 9:30 a.m. for the World Cup match, and @pghtacoboys will be slinging breakfast tacos until noon.
Trace Brewing, 4312 Main St., Bloomfield — The popular craft brewery is inviting fans to cheer on the U.S. during its three group stage games. Trace is projecting all U.S. matches on its 110-inch big screen with audio, including opening at 10 a.m. on Saturday for the USA-Netherlands match. Taqueria Pastorcito food truck will be arriving at 11 a.m. for lunch. Coffee also available.
Voodoo Brewing, 956 5th Ave., New Kensington — A fun-filled day awaits soccer fans in New Kensington, as the Voodoo Brewing restaurant and tap room is opening early at 9:30 a.m. for the USA-Netherlands match. It is also Parade Day in New Ken, so fans can hopefully celebrate after the match by joining the holiday parade that starts at noon. The brewery is also showing the later Argentina-Australia match at 2 p.m.
