Westmoreland campus clippings: Chrisman helps Baylor acrobatics win title

Baylor acrobatics and tumbling junior Hannah Chrisman (Norwin) won her second NCATA national championship, the second-seeded Bears’ sixth in a row, with a 279.790 to 276.465 victory over Azusa Pacific.

Chrisman, a base/top performer, is the sister-in-law of Norwin alum Max McDowell, a minor league baseball player with the New York Yankees.

Baseball

Chatham: Senior Ryan Shawley (Latrobe), a dual-position player, is hitting .325 with 10 runs and seven RBIs in 21 games this season. He has seven starts on the mound and leads the team in strikeouts (32) but is seeking his first win of 2021.

Kansas State: Junior outfielder Zach Kokoska (Latrobe) belted his team-leading 13th home run as the Wildcats rolled past Texas Southern, 16-1. Kokoska came in hitting .363 with 38 RBIs. K-State leads the nation with 68 homers.

Mercyhurst: Grad student pitcher Michael Krauza (Franklin Regional) is 8-1 with a 2.18 ERA and 49 strikeouts in 41 1/3 innings for the Lakers (22-13, 13-10 PSAC). Krauza began his college career at Xavier before transferring to St. Bonaventure then Mercyhurst.

Pitt-Greensburg: Senior Jacob Davey hit two homers and drove in five to lead UPG (6-19, 4-10 AMCC) to an 11-6 win over visiting Alfred State.

Senior Dylan DeRoss went 3 for 5 with a homer and three RBIs in a 16-10 loss in the first game of the doubleheader.

In a one-sided, doubleheader sweep of Medaille, DeRoss, Tony Ianuzzo, Andy Prentice and Paul Tumicki hit home runs. The Bobcats had 44 hits, includeing nine doubles and two triples in the two games. Brody Bonadio went 7 for 11 with four runs and four RBIs, and Jacob Davey had five hits, scored six times and drive in five.

Potomac State: Freshman Josh Hoffman (Belle Vernon) homered three times, going 4 for 6 with eight RBIs, in a 16-15 win over Monroe.

He also ripped a winning double to beat Charleston, 4-3, and in a 15-9 win over CCBC Catonsville, Hoffman was 2 for 4 with two homers and five RBIs.

Hoffman was hitting .357 with 10 homers and 43 RBIs in 36 games for the Catamounts (30-6).

He also has scored 32 runs and has 10 steals.

Seton Hill: Senior Derek Orndorff launched a three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Griffins (25-4, 17-4 PSAC) to a 7-4 victory over Cal (Pa.). Orndorff and senior Tyler Peterson had two hits each, and junior Nash Bryan picked up the win in relief punching out five in 2 1/3 innings.

Sophomore Owen Sabol (Penn-Trafford) was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Week after he went 11 for 22 in eight games with 14 runs scored. He had four doubles, two homers and seven RBIs. Also, senior Peyton Reesman was tabbed the PSAC Pitcher of the Week. He earned two victories and worked 7.2 innings without giving up a hit, and struck out 11 with no walks.

Washington & Jefferson: Sophomore Tyler Horvat (Penn-Trafford) picked up his seventh pitching win of the season (7-0) in a 15-2 win over Thiel, then homered and drove in four runs in a 12-2 win over the Tomcats in the second game of a doubleheader. He also homered in a 17-2 win over Thiel.

Softball

Cal (Pa.): Freshman Charity Henderson (Southmoreland) continues to put up big numbers for the Vulcans (19-8). She is hitting .313 with a team-leading four homers and 25 runs and 18 RBIs.

Senior Alexa Pastor (Hempfield) also has a .313 average with 12 RBIs and 10 runs.

Geneva: Sophomore Madison Forsythe (Penn-Trafford) is hitting .378 with 30 runs and 27 RBIs for Geneva (33-5, 16-2), which clinched the No. 1 seed in the PAC Tournament.

Gannon: Junior Rebecca Tatone (Latrobe) earned her first save of the season as Gannon edged Tiffin, 2-1. She is 10-2 this season with a 2.40 ERA and eight complete games.

Mercyhurst: Senior outfielder Sarah Koscho (Penn-Trafford) went 2 for 3 with a home run and two RBIs as the Lakers defeated Slippery Rock, 10-5, while freshman pitcher Morgan Hilty (Penn-Trafford) picked up her fourth win of the season in a 3-1 victory over the Rock. The sweep clinched a PSAC playoff berth.

Notre Dame: Senior pitcher Morgan Ryan (Hempfield) worked four innings of relief, allowing one hit with three strikeouts as the Fighting Irish defeated Charlotte, 11-6.

Ryan is 1-1 with a 1.75 ERA in 16 appearances. She has 19 K’s and five walks.

Penn State Altoona: Senior Olivia Miller (Yough) went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run in a 7-2 win over Hilbert.

Seton Hill: The Griffins (28-10, 25-7) clinched their first PSAC West title with a 10-1 win over Cal (Pa.).

Freshman pitcher Logan Hartman moved to 10-0 as she allowed four hits and struck out seven, and freshman Mackenzie Zang hit a grand slam.

Grad student Christiana Skrabak (Norwin) went 3 for 3, junior Morgan Toal, senior Samantha Estupinian and grad student Alexis Vargas had two hits each for Seton Hill.

Senior Jenna Osikowicz (Hempfield) went 3 for 4 with three RBIs in an 11-2 win over Edinboro. Skrabak added two more hits in the regular-season finale, a 14-0 win over Edinboro.

Hartman was named PSAC West Pitcher of the Week. She went 3-0 in three starts, striking out 11 and allowing four earned runs. She tossed a two-hit shutout against Edinboro.
