Westmoreland campus clippings: FR grad Brooke Horvath fuels fast start for Westminster women’s soccer

Freshman forward Brooke Horvath has played a key role for the Westminster women’s soccer team, which is off to a fast start.
The Franklin Regional graduate has pumped in six goals and dealt out four assists for the Titans, who were 5-0-1 heading into the week.
Horvath had two-goal games against John Carroll and Wooster. Westminster won those games, 3-0 and 6-0. She was named the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week.
The Titans have outscored their opponents 24-3.
Other local team members are freshmen Mackenzie Powell (Penn-Trafford) and Natalie Vilchek (Yough), both of whom play in the midfield.
Vilchek has a goal and two assists.

Women’s soccer
Pitt-Greensburg: Freshman Emily Bonelli scored four goals, and junior Ashley Lucas added two as the Bobcats moved to 6-0 (1-0 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference) with a 9-0 win over Medaille.
Slippery Rock: Senior defenders Katy Ericson (Norwin) and Emily Arnold (Norwin) have contributed to the Rock’s 4-0-1 start. Slippery Rock has allowed just four goals in five games.

Men’s soccer
Saint Vincent: Junior goalkeeper Shane Piper (Mt. Pleasant) has made two starts and played in three games for the Bearcats. He is 1-1 with seven saves.
Seton Hill: Sophomore forward Fletcher Amos, freshman forward AJ Koma and junior forward Elias Vangen had goals to pace the Griffins (2-2-1) to a 3-2 victory against host Roberts Wesleyan.

Football
Akron: Redshirt sophomore defensive lineman Logan Hawkins (Penn-Trafford) had a sack and a forced fumble for the Zips in a 35-14 win against Bryant.
Allegheny: Sophomore running back Kyrie Miller (Ligonier Valley) ran for 49 yards and scored a touchdown on 1-yard run in the Gators’ 36-28 loss to Wabash.
Miller also had two catches for 10 yards.
Seton Hill: Junior kicker Luke Hauger (Mt. Pleasant) connected on his sixth field goal of the season (31 yards), but the Griffins (2-1) lost to Kutztown, 14-3.
Senior linebacker Jaylen McDuffie continued his solid play with a game-high 14 tackles.
Villanova: Senior tight end Todd Summers (Franklin Regional) had three catches for 49 yards as the Wildcats got past Richmond, 34-27.
Washington & Jefferson: Sophomore running back Justin Huss (Derry) ran for 89 yards and a touchdown on five carries and added five receptions for 26 yards in the Presidents’ 28-3 win over Bethany.
Senior wide receiver Cameron O’Brien (Norwin) led the team with four catches for 52 yards and a score. He also had three tackles.
Waynesburg: Junior running back Justin Flack (Derry) ran 27 times for 184 yards and two touchdowns as the Yellow Jackets defeated Thiel, 52-14.

Women’s volleyball
Saint Vincent: Junior Carly Augustine (Latrobe) proved there can be triple-doubles in volleyball, too, as she registered 13 kills, 18 assists and 12 digs in a 3-1 win over Grove City in PAC play.
Freshman Kaelyn Staples and junior Becca Miller (Norwin) added 12 and 11 kills, respectively, in the victory.
Seton Hill: The Griffins (5-4) won for the fifth time in six matches with a 3-1 victory over IUP (15-25, 25-18, 30-28, 25-20).
Sophomore Mara Yahner led the way with 20 kills, and sophomore Riley Rock added 10, to go with 21 service aces. Junior Carrie Leazer had a team-high 19 digs.
Another key senior player for the Griffins is middle hitter Kiersten Schade (Hempfield), a transfer from Eastern Kentucky.

Men’s golf
Gannon: Junior Clayton Skoff (Franklin Regional) carded rounds of 76 and 74 to finish to finish tied for 27th, and freshman teammate Michael Wareham (Franklin Regional) tied for 63rd (81-77) at the Charleston Invitational.
Penn State Altoona: Freshman Logan Divald (Norwin) tied Westminster’s Cal Cummins to earn a half-point for the Lions, who lost the first Hite Cup, a Ryder Cup-style event at Laurel Valley Golf Club, 4.5 to 2.5.
Freshman Nathan Graham (Norwin) made his college debut at the event.
When the Lions finished second in the Mountain Valley Collegiate Classic, Divald shot a second-round 73, the fifth-lowest score in program history, and finished eighth (153), and Graham took 14th (161).

Women’s cross country
Saint Vincent: Senior Sydney Green (Latrobe) ran to a first-place finish to lead the Bearcats to a victory in their home invitational.
Green crossed the finish line in 20 minutes, 35.72 seconds, just ahead of teammates Laura Aston (Hempfield), a senior and sophomore Lauren Brennan, who were second and fourth, respectively.
