Westmoreland campus clippings: Latrobe grad among Duquesne's best high jumpers
Duquesne senior Sadie Wetzel (Latrobe) moved into a tie for second place on the Dukes’ all-time performance list in the the high jump with a third-place leap of 1.72 meters at the Akron Invitational.
She tied Shannon Taub, who is an assistant coach for the Dukes. Wetzel has set a personal record in three straight meets.
Senior Hannah Seitzinger (Belle Vernon) helped the distance-medley relay to a victory in 12 minutes, 1.41 seconds.
Freshman Cydney Blahovec (Hempfield) was part of the runner-up team in the relay race.
Women’s indoor track and field
Clarion: Junior Leah Perry (Derry) posted a score of 2,985 in the pentathlon at the Youngstown State Mid-Major Invitational, the top total in the program since 2003. Perry was fourth in the 60-meter hurdles (9.47 seconds), fifth in the long jump (5.07 meters) and ninth in the high jump (1.53 meters). She also competed in the 800 and shot put.
Point Park: Senior Allison Plassio (Norwin) qualified for the NAIA nationals in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 2:59.58 for ninth place at the Rutgers Scarlett Knights Open.
Robert Morris: Junior Rayna Todero (Franklin Regional) gave the Colonials 18 points with a pair of strong finishes at the Bob Shannon Invitational at Denison. She won the triple jump with a mark of 11.10 meters, then took second in the long jump (5.13).
Her sister, freshman Sierra Todero (Franklin Regional), came in third in the triple jump (10.71 meters) and was fourth in the long jump (5.00).
Freshman Emma Jiancristoforo (Norwin) took second in the 3,000-meter run (11:49.10) and was seventh in the mile-run (5:32.36).
Saint Vincent: Freshman Caroline Kozera and sophomore Miranda Cincotta set school records while competing at the Youngstown State Mid-Major. Kozera broke her own mark in the 60-meter dash with a time of 8.56 seconds before she took eighth in the 60-meter hurdles in 9.59 seconds to break another one of her school records.
Cincotta, meantime, took sixth in the 800-meter run with a school-record time of 2:21.09, and later finished sixth in the mile with a time of 5:17.38 to break another record. She was named the PAC Newcomer of the Week.
Sophomore Kristen Prince finished fourth in the 5,000-meter run in 18:40.66.
Seton Hill: The Griffins’ distance-medley relay team of junior Kate Pipilo, junior Kayla Saylor, sophomore Jada Freeman and senior Isabella Myles finished second at the Youngstown State Mid-Major with a time of 12:54.21.
The 1,600-meter relay of Saylor, senior Anna Roberts, freshman Carly Yanek, and freshman Ayianna Martin (Hempfield) took fourth in 4:14.29.
Sophomore Sara Renshaw finished seventh in the 1,000-meter run in 3:18.63.
Waynesburg: Sophomore Megan Barry (Norwin) finished 18th in the shot put (8.89 meters) and took 26th in the long jump (3.44) at the Bob Shannon Invitational at Denison.
Wheeling: Junior Tara Perry (Derry) took fourth in the high jump (1.58 meters) at the Youngstown State Mid-Major. With a season-best mark of 4.90 meters, she also finished 27th in the long jump.
Men’s indoor track and field
Cal (Pa.): Grad student Mason Jobe (Greensburg Salem) reached the qualifying standard in the 800-meter run with a mark of 1:56.34 at the Boston Lehane Scarlet & White Invite in Boston, Mass.
Grove City: Senior Gabe Dunlap (Penn-Trafford) finished in fifth place in the heptathlon at the Youngstown State Mid-Major Invitational. He tallied 4,060 points, finishing first among Division III competition.
Seton Hill: Junior John Giansante (Norwin) recorded a runner-up finish in the triple jump at the Youngstown State Mid-Major with a mark of 13.85 meters.
His teammate, junior Ben Kissell (Hempfield), took second in the pole vault (4.24 meters), and senior Ben Hartman was 10th in the 60-meter hurdles (8.69 seconds).
Westminster: With a season-best time of 22.71 seconds, grad student Ryan Beard (Franklin Regional) finished 10th in the 200-meter dash at the Youngstown Stat Mid-Major Invitational. He also was 25th in the 60-meter dash (7.22).
Softball
Seton Hill: The season just started, but the Griffins looked to be in midseason form in North Carolina. The team went 4-0 on its road trip, sweeping doubleheaders from Chowan (14-0, 12-4) and Barton (9-0, 5-4).
Senior Nina Grandey went 7 for 14 with seven RBIs and four stolen bases, sophomore Camryn Murphy was 7 for 15 with two home runs, two triples and nine RBIs, junior Brooklyn Fukushima drove in six runs and grad student Morgan Toal doubled four times for the Griffins, who piled up 40 runs. Senior pitchers Lauren Dellett and Logan Hartman each went 2-0. Dellett struck out 15 and walked four over 12 innings.
Women’s bowling
Saint Vincent: The Bearcats (50-10, 18-2) went 9-1 in the AMCC round-robin tournament to earn the No. 1 seed in the conference championships in March. Freshman Skyy Nicholls led the team with a 190.8 average, with teammates junior Sabine Strickland (181), sophomore Abby Justice (177.0) and senior Jackie Koehler (175.8) close behind.
Men’s lacrosse
Saint Vincent: Senior Caleb Hawkins was named to the Inside Lacrosse Preseason All-America Team, the first player in program history to earn that recognition. Hawkins was third in the PAC last season with 67 points (42 goals, 25 assists) and produced 15 multi-goal games. He ranks eighth in program history with 161 points. Last season, he had 34 goals and 14 assists for a career-best 38 points.
Seton Hill: The Griffins are favored to win the Great Midwest Conference, as indicated by the conference’s preseason coaches poll. Seton Hill is No. 1, followed by No. 2 Mercyhurst, No. 3 Lake Erie, No. 4 Walsh and No. 5 Wheeling. The Griffins finished 12-5 last season, winning the GMAC with a 7-0 mark. They lost to Mercyhurst in the conference final.
Women’s lacrosse
Seton Hill: Three-time defending champion Seton Hill is the preseason favorite to win the PSAC West title, according to the annual coaches poll. The Griffins, PSAC West favorites three years running, were 15-2 (12-0 PSAC) last season and reached the first round of the NCAA Division II Tournament.
