Westmoreland County campus clippings: GCC grad Matt Metrosky draws interest in transfer portal
Looking for a new college football team, Matt Metrosky could still end up playing close to home.
The junior lineman, who was a member of the Pitt football team the last four years as a walk-on, recently entered the NCAA transfer portal and immediately got a nibble on the line.
The 6-foot-1, 295-pounder from Greensburg Central Catholic picked up a scholarship offer from Robert Morris.
Women’s track and field
Michigan: Sophomore Liz Tapper (Hempfield) has only been competing for a short time in Ann Arbor, but she has found a spot in the record book. Tapper broke the program shot put record at the indoor season-opening Wolverine Invitational.
She threw a personal-best 16.86 meters (55.3 feet, 3.75 inches) on her fifth attempt for the record.
Tapper came in with the seventh-best mark in the program at 15.84, but beat that twice, throwing 15.88 on her fourth throw.
Men’s basketball
Cal (Pa.): Senior Kadyn Hannah (Franklin Regional) is averaging 8.3 points and 5.6 rebounds a game for the Vulcans (9-8, 4-5 PSAC) and has started all 17 games.
Coker: Sophomore guard Landon Butler (Latrobe) scored a career-high 22 points, shooting 8 of 11 from the field, in a 118-106 win over RV Carson-Newman. Butler is averaging 8.7 points and 2.5 assists for the season.
Pitt-Greensburg: The Bobcats (8-6, 2-3 AMCC) ran their winning streak to five with an 89-76 victory over Hilbert. Junior Matthew Marinchak (Ligonier Valley) poured in 20 points, junior Jackson Byer added 18 points and 11 rebounds, and sophomore Trent Rozich had 16 points and eight assists.
Pitt-Johnstown: Adam Bilinsky (Norwin) scored 16 points to tie a career high, including a pair of 3-pointers, to help UPJ to a 68-65 victory over Clarion. Bilinsky was coming off a 10-point effort against Edinboro.
Saint Vincent: Welcome home, Jaden Gales. The standout forward who left after two seasons to play at Division II Newman in Kansas, has rejoined the Bearcats as a junior mid-season transfer.
Gales made his return debut Saturday in a home game against Allegheny and scored 15 points to lead five Bearcats in double figures. He also pulled down 11 rebounds.
Freshman Terek Crosby (Yough) tied a career high with 14 points, including 4 of 5 3-pointers, while sophomore Maxwell Gordon scored 13, junior Dev Ostrowski 11 and grad Osyon Jones 10.
SVC moved to 11-3 overall and 7-2 in the PAC.
In the previous game, the Bearcats racked up the most points they have scored in a game since 2013-14 in a 112-81 win over Bethany. Ostrowski had 23 points and Crosby added 14.
Crosby was named the PAC Newomer of the Week.
Seton Hill: Grad student Ryan Meis scored 19 points and redshirt freshman Edir Ortiz added 17 to pace the Griffins (10-6, 3-5 PSAC West) to a tight, 87-85 win over Clarion.
Seton Hill shot 55.7% from the field and made 14 of 29 3-pointers to snap a four-game losing streak.
Griffins coach Ben Wilkins, a Mt. Pleasant alum, has reached double-digit wins in all three seasons he has been on the bench.
Women’s basketball
Allegheny: Freshman Ava Kobus (Norwin) was named the PAC Newcomer of the Week. Kobus had 10 points and five rebounds in a 74-65 win over Westminster. S
She had nine points, four rebounds and two steals in 24 minutes in a loss to Saint Vincent.
Cedarville: Junior guard Brianna Zajicek (Norwin) scored 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds as the Yellow Jackets dumped Ursuline, 80-70, to move to 8-6 on the season.
Chatham: Junior Alyssa Laukus (Norwin) tied a team high with 13 points and also grabbed six rebounds as the Cougars defeated Geneva, 78-44, in PAC action.
Grove City: Senior guard Mara Polczynski (Norwin) contributed 10 points as the Wolverines defeated Geneva, 60-49, in the PAC. Polczynski added 10 points and eight rebounds in a 65-55 victory over Bethany.
Holy Family: Holy Family moved to 12-3 with a 77-50 victory over Bloomfield as freshman Lauren Palangio (Norwin) had 10 points, nine rebounds and three blocks in 23 minutes off the bench.
Mercyhurst: Junior Bailey Kuhns (Greensburg Central Catholic) had 19 points and six rebounds but the Lakers fell to Farleigh Dickinson, 77-63.
Pitt-Johnstown: Sophomore Camille Dominick (Latrobe) is averaging 5.4 points and 4.0 rebounds in 15 games for the Mountain Cats. She has started four games.
Saint Vincent: SVC (8-6, 7-2 PAC) posted its third straight win, 76-61 over Allegheny, as senior Emily Thompson scored 20 points, junior Makenna Maier added 13 and eight rebounds, and sophomore Danielle Pontius and junior Reese Gadsby chipped in 11 apiece.
Maier was named the PAC Player of the Week.
Seton Hill: The Griffins (15-1) are displaying staying power in the national polls.
Seton Hill remained at No. 5 in the D2CSC Division II Poll, while moving into the WBCA Division II Coaches Poll with the No. 10 spot.
The D2CSC Atlantic Region poll still shows the Griffins at No. 1.
Five players scored in double figures as the Griffins pounded Clarion, 92-68, led by junior Hallie Cowan with 25 points. Sophomore forward Mia Kalich had an impressive double-double with 14 points and 23 rebounds, 15 on the defensive glass.
Kalich added a second straight double-double — her eighth of the season — as the Griffins downed Cal (Pa.), 93-74. She had 20 points and 18 rebounds. Grad guard Christiane Frye led the way with 26 points.
Kalich was named the PSAC West Defensive Player of the Week.
Wrestling
Edinboro: Grad student Colton Camacho (Franklin Regional) earned a victory via pin at 133 pounds as the Fighting Scots defeated Clarion, 26-12.
Ohio: Redshirt junior 174-pounder Garret Thompson (Franklin Regional) went 2-0 as the Bobcats split a couple of matches at the NWCA National Duals.
Pitt: Redshirt sophomore Finn Solomon (Franklin Regional) won by technical fall and redshirt sophomore Dayton Pitzer (Mt. Pleasant) added a decision victory as the 18th-ranked Panthers topped No. 15 Stanford, 24-15.
Pitzer, the Panthers’ 285-pounder, also was a winner in a 22-17 win over No. 22 West Virginia. He won by fall to cap the win for the Panthers (7-2, 1-0 ACC).
Seton Hill: The Griffins won eight of 10 matches and rolled past Salem, 40-9, to move to 6-5 overall for the season.
Freshman Jacob Braun (Latrobe), junior Ty Linsenbigler (Hempfield), sophomore Collin Hearn and junior Kane Kettering all registered pins in the victory.
Washington & Jefferson: Sophomore wrestler Christian McChesney (Greensburg Salem) was named the PAC Wrestler of the Week. He won the 285-pound title with a 4-0 record at the Washington & Lee Invitational.
He followed by adding a pair of wins against Washington & Lee and McDaniel.
Women’s swimming
Washington & Jefferson: Sophomore Morgan Baughman (Mt. Pleasant) was named the PAC Swimmer of the Week.
Baughman won two events and two relays against Franciscan. She took first in the 50- and 100-yard freestyles.
She helped the 200 free relay to a season-best time of 1:49.16.
Women’s lacrosse
Seton Hill: Grace Cobaugh has joined the coaching staff as an assistant to Dina Cifelli. Cobaugh has been the program director at True Dynamite Lacrosse-Pennsylvania for the past year and has been coaching with the club since 2018.
She knows the PSAC having played for four years at Millersville where she was a captain and all-region player. She scored 82 goals and has 21 assists in her career.
Cobaugh scored over 100 goals in high school, playing for Pope John Paul II.
Women’s bowling
Saint Vincent: The Bearcats rolled a school-record game of 1,060 — an average of 212 per bowler — at the Greater Pittsburgh Collegiate Classic at Hillview Lanes in Greensburg.
