Westmoreland County campus clippings: Penn-Trafford grad Nick Turowski wins Red Flash Invitational
Nick Turowski knew he could compete at the NCAA Division I level, but winning might take some time.
OK, maybe not.
Turowski, a freshman golfer at West Virginia and a Penn-Trafford graduate, won the Red Flash Invitational at Sunnehanna Country Club in Johnstown.
He was the only player to finish under par, posting a 1-under score of 139 over 36 holes.
Turowski made five birdies over the final 14 holes in the final round to shoot a 69.
Fairmont State: Senior Alex Turowski (Penn-Trafford) tied for seventh for a team-best finish at the Mountain East Conference Tournament at Glade Springs Resort in Daniels, W.Va. He finished at 223 over 54 holes (78, 71, 74).
The team finished fifth overall.
Pitt-Greensburg: The Bobcats had their best showing of the season, collecting a victory at the Hawk Open in Clymer, N.Y.
UPG posted a score of 316, 11 shots ahead of Pitt-Bradford.
Senior Vinny Treonze and junior Zach Abdallah (Franklin Regional) tied for second place with matching 75s, while junior Nicholas Thomas (Derry) shot a 77 to take fifth.
Sophomore Ashton Beighley (Derry) and freshman Jayden Diehl tied for sixth at 79, and sophomore Ethan Rice was eighth with an 80.
Football
Duquesne: Fifth-year linebacker Gianni Rizzo (Norwin) had four tackles, two for loss, as the Dukes defeated St. Francis (Pa.), 38-7, to move to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in the NEC.
Edinboro: Senior linebacker C.J. Waldier (Yough) collected eight tackles and recovered a fumble, and senior safety Toby Cline (Jeannette) had an interception and a tackle for loss in a 27-23 upset over IUP.
Elon: Redshirt junior Jack Salopek (Norwin) went 17 of 29 for 185 yards and an interception in a 17-10 loss to New Hampshire.
Grove City: The Wolverines moved to 5-0 with a 17-10 win against Carnegie Mellon as junior linebacker Jack Jollie (Penn-Trafford) made eight tackles and recorded half of a sack.
Seton Hill: Redshirt junior Ky’Ron Craggette ran for two touchdowns and senior Jake Cruz threw for one, but the Griffins dropped a 28-21 decision to Cal (Pa.) to fall to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in the PSAC West.
Seton Hill tied the Vulcans at 21-21 early in the fourth, but Cal scored with 14 seconds remaining to win it.
Senior kicker Jack Wagner was named the PSAC West Special Teams Athlete of the Week. He averaged 51.3 yards per punt in the loss to Cal (Pa.), with five downed inside the 15-yard line.
Washington & Jefferson: Senior Zach Cernuto (Southmoreland) had four catches for 35 yards and a touchdown, and grad student Justin Johns (Franklin Regional) made eight tackles in the Presidents’ 73-21 win over Geneva.
Wisconsin: Sophomore running back Cade Yacamelli (Penn-Trafford) rushed for 72 yards on four carries as the Badgers ripped Rutgers, 42-7.
Women’s golf
Carlow: Junior Ava Grew (Hempfield) was named the USCAA Golfer of the Week. Grew tied for first place at the AMCC Invitational, carding an 83 while leading the Celtics to the team title (364).
Men’s soccer
Grove City: Sophomore defender Jake Kimmich (Franklin Regional) scored his first goal of the season for the Wolverines in a 4-2 win over Westminster.
Penn State Behrend: Senior midfielder Blake Cooper (Franklin Regional) scored three goals and freshman goalkeeper Anthony Scalise (Norwin) earned a shutout as the Lions won, 5-0, over Pitt-Bradford.
Pitt-Greensburg: Senior Lucas Killen (Penn-Trafford) bumped in his second goal of the season in the 84th minute as UPG downed Penn State Altoona, 1-0.
Sophomore Brett Barnes earned the shutout in goal.
Saint Louis: Grad student Nate Ward (Greensburg Central Catholic) has a goal and two assists so far in his final season of collegiate soccer.
Saint Vincent: Sophomore forward Mattia Speretta scored two goals and had an assist as SVC raced past Waynesburg, 4-0, for its second win of the season.
Westminster: Senior forward Lucas Toohey (Mt. Pleasant) scored a goal in the 59th minute, his fourth of the season, in a 4-2 loss against Grove City.
Women’s soccer
Pitt-Greensburg: Freshman Sierra Frisoli had two goals, while senior Sarah Tonkovich and freshman Isabella Swartz (Penn-Trafford) each added one as UPG blanked Penn State Altoona, 4-0.
Freshman Riley Gesinski (Mt. Pleasant), freshman Dionna Santia and freshman Kathryn Chiado had assists for the Bobcats (6-3-4, 2-1 AMCC).
Saint Vincent: Sophomore Jordan Kirkwood (Valley) scored the game-winning goal with nine minutes remaining as the Bearcats (11-1-1, 5-0 PAC) clipped Waynesburg, 3-2, to run their winning streak to seven.
The first-place Bearcats are off to their best start in program history.
Waynesburg: Sophomore forward Nicky Veychek (Yough) scored the first goal of her college career with a penalty kick in the 51st minute, as the Yellow Jackets defeated Thiel, 8-0.
Waynesburg pelted the Tomcats with a season-high 34 shots.
Veychek has played in all eight games.
Westminster: Senior forward Brooke Horvath (Franklin Regional) had a goal as the Titans tied Grove City, 2-2. It was her fifth score of the season.
Men’s swimming
Clarion: Sophomore Henry Miller (Southmoreland) and senior Austin Prokopec (Penn-Trafford) teamed up for a win in the 200-yard medley relay in a time of 1 minute, 33.62 seconds at the PSAC Sprint Frenzy meet.
The Golden Eagles edged West Chester by three-quarters of a second.
Miller also won the 50-yard breaststroke in 26.75 seconds, while Prokopec won the 50 freestyle in 21.38.
Women’s swimming
Washington & Jefferson: Sophomore Morgan Baughman (Mt. Pleasant) took first in the 100-yard freestyle (58.02) and ended second in the 200 freestyle (2:16.52) against Penn State Altoona.
Women’s tennis
Saint Vincent: The Bearcats (12-3) earned the No. 3 seed in the PAC Tournament and will host No. 6 Franciscan on Tuesday in the first round.
Women’s volleyball
Saint Vincent: Freshman Meegan Williams, an outside hitter, was named the PAC Newcomer of the Week for the second straight time and the third time this season. Williams had 32 kills and 45 digs over two matches.
She had a double-double with a career-high 24 kills and 24 digs in a 3-2 win over Washington & Jefferson.
Seton Hill: The Griffins moved to 13-2 overall and 3-1 in the PSAC West with a 3-0 sweep of Cal (Pa.).
Senior Paige Cole had a match-high 12 kills, sophomore Ella Deeter added 10, and senior Abby Osterling delivered 31 assists.
The Griffins swept the PSAC West weekly awards. Cole was named athlete of the week, while sophomore middle blocker Catie Flohr was the top defensive player.
Flohr had 12 blocks over three matches, adding 44 kills.
Thiel: Sophomore Arin DeLattre (Hempfield) had six blocks and six kills as Thiel downed Waynsburg, 3-0 (25-18, 25-12, 25-17).
Waynesburg: Senior Jordan Stein (Norwin) racked up 30 or more digs in a match for the seventh time this season, with 31, in a 3-1 loss to Franciscan.
Women’s cross country
Saint Vincent: Freshman Grace Neubert was named the PAC Newcomer of the Week. Her strong debut season included a 33rd-place finish (out of 390 runners) at the NCAA Pre-Nationals, where she ran a time of 22 minutes, 20 seconds on the 6K course.
