Westmoreland County campus clippings: Pitt-Greensburg's Chuck Myers earns milestone win

Pitt-Greensburg softball coach Chuck Myers reached a milestone when the Bobcats defeated Chatham in the first game of a doubleheader.

UPG won both games 6-2, with the first going into the books as Myers’ 100th career win.

The sweep was the first of the season for the Bobcats (5-9).

In the opener, senior Melanie Mienke and junior Autumn Powell combined for seven strikeouts, with Powell earning the win in relief.

Hunter Taylor had a three-run triple.

In the second game, Powell, sophomore Mia Dalessandro, sophomore Mackenzie Lamb and freshman Madyson Hart (Mt. Pleasant) all had two hits.

Men’s swimming

Saint Vincent: Junior Jacob Dzurica (Hempfield) earned All-American honors in the 50-yard freestyle at the NCAA Division III Championships in Greensboro, N.C. He placed eighth in the event in a time of 20.08 seconds.

He is the third All-American in program history, joining Jacob Davis and Zach Baum.

Dzurica swam a school-record time of 19.82 seconds in the prelims.

Women’s bowling

Saint Vincent: The Bearcats claimed their first AMCC championship by holding off William Smith College, 2-1, in the final series of the conference tournament Sunday at Pines Plaza Lanes.

SVC (49-17) moves on to the national tournament April 3-5 at a site to be announced. The selection show is Wednesday.

In the AMCC win, SVC won twice in a row after dropping the opener of the mega-match series.

A best-of-7 Baker series decided the winner, with SVC routing William Smith in the fourth game 193-139 to seal it.

Sophomore Skyy Nicholls led the Bearcats with a 204.1 average and freshman Brooke Street was next at 198.2.

For the tournament, freshman Mareana Pilyih averaged 207.5 and Nicholls 199.7.

Pitt-Greensburg: Senior Erica Moss (Greensburg Salem) was named to the all-tournament team at the AMCC Championships.

Hockey

Saint Vincent: SVC won its second straight College Hockey East championship and advanced to the American Collegiate Hockey Association D3 Tournament.

The Bearcats, though, went 0-2 in the first two games of pool play at the national tournament, falling 8-0 to Lawrence Tech and 5-0 to Calvin.

Baseball

Bowling Green: Junior leadoff hitter Katie Hutter (Mt. Pleasant) is batting .284 with 23 hits — five doubles, two home runs — and 11 RBIs in 28 games.

Eastern Michigan: Junior Ty Stecko (Norwin) belted a pair of home runs, giving him five for the season, drove in three runs and scored three times in a 14-11 loss to Miami (Ohio).

Stecko transferred from Mount St. Mary’s, where he played two seasons as an infielder, starting 22 games last season. He hit .226 with 22 RBIs.

Mercyhurst: Junior Jayden Walker (Norwin) was named a Northeast Conference Prime Performer. The utility man is hitting .326 with a team-high 11 doubles, two home runs, 18 RBIs and 13 runs for the Lakers.

Pitt: Junior Jake Kendro (Norwin) has started 16 games and played in 18 for the Panthers. He has four doubles, 12 runs and eight RBIs.

Junior pitcher Noah Czajkowski (Norwin) is 1-0 with a 6.00 ERA in five appearances (6 innings). Czajkowski spent the last two seasons at St. Bonaventure.

Pitt-Greensburg: Junior James Domer already had the program’s career record for triples when he also claimed the top mark for doubles.

Domer ripped his 41st double to break the mark of 40 set by Chris Common (Penn-Trafford) in 2019 as UPG was roughed up by Waynesburg, 23-8.

Domer homered in the second game of the doubleheader, an 11-10 win for UPG. The Bobcats won on a walk-off hit-by-pitch.

Domer and senior Thomas Smith each has four hits, and Colin Solinski also homered for UPG (3-10).

Domer was named the AMCC Baseball Athlete of the Week.

Seton Hill: The Griffins put together a six-game winning streak and returned to the NCBWA Top 25, at the No. 22 spot.

In a recent 4-3 victory over Shippensburg, sophomore Jakob Haynes (Penn-Trafford), senior Max Mandler and junior Joe Fiedor (Hempfield) had three hits apiece.

The Griffins (15-3) then made a statement with a convincing sweep of PSAC West preseason favorite IUP. Seton Hill won 19-1 and 16-4.

In the second game, Haynes launched three home runs and drove in six, and junior Jack Whalen (Norwin) added three hits and three RBIs.

Game 1 saw sophomore Owen Henne deliver four hits, while Whalen and Mandler had three apiece, and grad pitcher Jon McCullough improved to 6-0 with five innings of three-hit baseball.

Haynes went 6 for 8 with four homers and nine RBIs in the twinbill. He was named the PSAC West Co-Athlete of the Week.

Softball

Ashland: Sophomore Maren Metikosh (Belle Vernon) is hitting .519 in her first 12 games with the Eagles. She has six RBIs and five runs scored.

Bloomsburg: Senior Emma Little (Penn-Trafford) is second on the team with a .408 batting average (20 for 49), has a team-leading seven doubles and is tied for the top spot with four home runs. She has 17 RBIs and 10 runs scored.

Little was named the PSAC East Athlete of the Week. She went 11 for 20 with two homers, three doubles, 10 RBIs and five runs over six games. Little is 13th on the program’s career RBI list with 111.

IUP: Junior Maddie Griffin (Ligonier Valley) went 3 for 4 with two triples and an RBI as the Crimson Hawks held on for an 8-7 victory over Clarion in PSAC West action.

Griffin was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Week after going 14 for 23 with eight runs, three doubles, three triples, nine RBIs and six steals in six games.

Lackawanna: Freshman Gracie Sokol (Belle Vernon) is hitting .275 with a double, triple and seven RBIs in 16 games — 14 starts.

Maine: Freshman shortstop Bailey Snowberger (Norwin) cracked her first college home run and went 4 for 4 with five RBIs as the Black Bears fell to Bryant, 9-8. Snowberger added two singles and a double.

Penn State: Senior Haylie Brunson (Mt. Pleasant) had three hits, including a double and home run, four RBIs and two runs as Penn State dropped two games against Indiana, 7-5 and 17-4.

Robert Morris: Redshirt junior Courtney Poulich (Mt. Pleasant) is hitting .363 and leads the Colonials with 17 runs scored. She has five home runs and 17 RBIs.

Saint Francis (Pa.): Sophomore Olivia Kolowitz (Belle Vernon) has a 3-6 record in 16 appearances, including 11 starts. She has three complete games for the Red Flash.

Saint Vincent: Olivia Bushore took a no-hitter into the seventh inning before surrendering a hit with two outs in the final frame, in a 7-0 win over Penn State Beaver.

Bushore struck out seven in the complete-game shutout.

Sophomore Alyssa Henderson went 2 for 3, freshman Dakota Hershberger added two hits and freshman Josey Michalski (Norwin) homered and drove in two for the Bearcats.

Freshman Eva Farone and freshman Lily Koller each had three hits, while freshman Taylor Williams, Hershberger and Koller all homered in a 10-8 win to sweep the doubleheader.

Seton Hill: The Griffins swept West Liberty, 3-0 and 10-4, to move to 13-5 on the season.

In the opening game, freshman Shelby Telegdy pitched a complete-game one-hitter, and freshman Anna Kalkowski and senior Brooke Cleland homered.

Seniors Bre Athey, Grace Paredes and Olivia Calvetti had three hits apiece, with Paredes driving in four runs, in Game 2.

Telegdy, who went 3-0 with a 0.77 ERA, was tabbed the PSAC West Pitcher of the Week.

Slippery Rock: Freshman pitcher Kayla Williams (Latrobe) is 1-2 with a 7.50 ERA in five appearances. She has given up three hits in 4 2/3 innings.

Westminster: Freshman pitcher Cheyenne Piper (Ligonier Valley) won her third consecutive start, allowing seven hits and two runs in a complete game.

Senior center fielder Sydney Lokay (Norwin) had a hit and scored a run for the Titans.

Men’s basketball

Westmoreland County Community College: Freshman Lorenzo Gardner (Monessen) was named to the All-NJCAA Region 20 Division II team as an honorable mention.

Gardner led the Wolfpack (7-21) in scoring with a 15.8-point average.

Wrestling

Washington & Jefferson: Sophomore Christian McChesney (Greensburg Salem) qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships for the first time. The 285-pounder finished 0-2 at Johnson & Wales’ Amica Mutual Pavilion in Providence, R.I.

Men’s volleyball

Grove City: Sophomore Andrew Kessler (Penn-Trafford) had seven kills and freshman Keith Otto (Penn-Trafford) added six in a 3-0 sweep of Hiram.

Men’s lacrosse

Seton Hill: The Griffins dismantled Wheeling in a GMAC match, 30-5, to move to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in conference play.

Junior Wade Brunelle had five goals and three assists, and senior Connor Zostant also scored five times.

Washington & Jefferson: Senior Austin Hopkins (Hempfield) had five caused turnovers with four ground balls, while junior Braden Petrarco (Norwin) had two goals in a 12-5 win over Earlham.

Men’s track and field

Penn State Behrend: Freshman Carter Tobin (Norwin) finished fourth in the 200-meter dash at the SUNYAC championships. Tobin ran a program record time of 22.14 seconds in a preliminary race.

Tobin qualified for the AARTFC meet in the 200, 60 and 800.

At that meet, the 800 relay took fifth place with a school-record time of 1 minute, 30.50 seconds.

He was 12th in the 200 and 16th in the 60.

Football

Saint Vincent: Brandon Peluso will serve as defensive line coach and help with special teams on new coach Casey Goff’s staff.

Peluso coached two years at Allegheny where he also coached the defensive line.

A Riverview alum, he worked with the same position at Marietta for four years after two years at Wilmington.
