Westmoreland County campus clippings: Seton Hill softball earns season-opening sweep

Yes, softball season is here again.

Seton Hill wasted little time getting on the winning track, sweeping a doubleheader from the host team in Mount Olive, N.C.

In a 6-5 win in eight innings, senior Brooklyn Fukushima went 3 for 4, homered and drove in three, including the go-ahead RBI in the eighth, and freshman winning pitcher Shelby Telegdy had two hits and two RBIs.

Fukushima and senior Bre Athey homered, freshman Anna Kalkowski went 3 for 3 and Athey and redshirt sophomore Kassidy Wittig had two hits each in a 6-3 win in Game 2.

Softball

Bowling Green: Junior Katie Hutter (Mt. Pleasant) belted a solo home run as the Falcons edged past Monmouth, 5-4, to earn a season-opening split.

Clarion: Junior Angelina Pepe (Norwin) doubled and earned the pitching win in as the Golden Eagles defeated Chowan, 9-7, in Murfreesboro, N.C.

Marist: Grad student Kiley Myers (Latrobe) pitched five shutout innings, allowing three hits, in an 11-0 win over UAPB in five innings to open the season.

Ohio: Senior catcher Emma Hoffner (Hempfield) went 3 for 4 with a grand slam, double and six RBIs as the Bobcats (4-0) outslugged UNC Greensboro, 14-10.

Penn State: Senior Haylie Brunson (Mt. Pleasant) doubled and scored, but the Nittany Lions (1-4) fell to Notre Dame, 4-2.

Men’s basketball

Cal (Pa.): Senior Kadyn Hannah (Franklin Regional) posted his third double-double of the season with a season-high 19 points and 10 rebounds, also adding five steals, in an 86-73 win over Slippery Rock.

Coker: Sophomore Landon Butler (Latrobe) scored 14 points, including two 3-pointers and 8 for 8 free throws, in a 131-117 win over Mars Hill.

Pitt-Greensburg: Junior Matt Marinchak (Ligonier Valley) became the 16th player in program history to score 1,000 career points when he put in 14 in an 81-60 win at Carlow.

Marinchak, who also scored more than 1,000 in high school, also pulled down 10 rebounds and added three steals in the win for the Bobcats (14-7, 8-4 AMCC).

Freshman Ty Keffer (Southmoreland) contributed 14 points, and sophomore Trent Rozich added 13.

The win was UPG’s fifth in a row and 11th in 12 games.

Pitt-Johnstown: Sophomore Adam Bilinsky (Norwin) was averaging 7.8 points and 3.3 rebounds in 20 games for the Mountain Cats. He had made five starts but mainly had been the first man off the bench.

Saint Vincent: SVC (16-5, 12-4) held off a frantic comeback by Washington & Jefferson to post a 93-90 win in the PAC.

The Bearcats led 92-82 with 57 seconds remaining before the Presidents surged to close the gap.

Senior Mike Iuzzolino led SVC with 21 points and six rebounds. Junior Jevontae Jones scored 17, junior Dev Ostrowski 14, freshman Terek Crosby (Yough) 11 and grad student Osyon Jones 10.

W&J went on an 8-0 run in a matter of seconds to get to within 92-90. The Presidents missed a go-ahead 3-pointer before Jones’ late free throw.

Freshman Cam Rowell (Franklin Regional) had 17 points and five rebounds in 34 minutes for the Presidents.

Seton Hill: Freshman Gage Lattimore had 19 points, and sophomore Kedrick Curtis and junior Gabe Gillespie added 16 each to pace the Griffins (14-10, 7-9) to a 77-60 win over Clarion.

Westmoreland County Community College: Freshman Colin Masten (Franklin Regional) scored a season-high 24 points to pace the Wolfpack in an 86-73 victory over Butler County Community College.

Women’s basketball

Grove City: Senior guard Mara Polczynski (Norwin) had a career-high 19 points and added seven rebounds, three assists and two steals to lead Grove City to a 77-68 win over Allegheny.

In 30 minutes, Polczynski made 6 of 12 shots — 2 of 3 from 3-point range — and 5 of 6 free throws.

Freshman Ava Kobus (Norwin) had 12 points off the bench for the Gators.

Mercyhurst: Junior Bailey Kuhns (Greensburg Central Catholic) reached the 1,000-point milestone over the weekend when she poured in 33 in a 60-58 loss to Le Moyne.

Saint Vincent: Senior Emily Thompson poured in 18 points, including three 3-pointers, and junior Reese Gadsby scored 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds as the Bearcats (12-8, 11-4 PAC) posted their fourth straight win, 63-56 over Westminster.

Seton Hill: Sophomore Mia Kalich scored 16 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, and junior Hallie Cowan had 16 points as Seton Hill (20-3, 14-2) topped Clarion, 80-64.

The Griffins have 20 wins for the first time since 2021-22.

Men’s volleyball

Grove City: Freshman Keith Otto (Penn-Trafford) had 13 kills, and sophomore Andrew Kessler (Penn-Trafford) had seven blocks in a 3-2 loss to Eastern.

Penn State: Redshirt senior Will Kuhns (Hempfield) had six kills, but the No. 17-ranked Nittany Lions fell to Harvard, 3-0, ending their 38-game EIVA winning streak.

Kuhns had a career-high 16 kills, a .321 hitting percentage and six digs as the Nittany Lions bounced back with a 3-0 sweep of Harvard.

Saint Vincent: Junior Zebadiah Wyant had eight kills and six digs, and freshman Jackson Genicola (Norwin) had 24 assists to lead SVC to a 3-0 win over Carlow in the Bearcats’ home opener.

Women’s swimming

Grove City: Freshman Gabby Kineer (Mt. Pleasant) was part of the winning 200-yard medley relay in a 159-99 victory over Westminster. The foursome’s time was 1 minute, 57.65 seconds.

Wrestling

Ohio: Redshirt junior Garrett Thompson (Franklin Regional) was named the Mid-American Conference Wrestler of the Week.

Thompson won a 13-1 major decision against No. 7-ranked Alex Cramer of Central Michigan.

Thompson was leading Ohio with 23 wins. He was 5-0 against the MAC.

Pitt: No. 13 Dayton Pitzer (Mt. Pleasant), a redshirt sophomore heavyweight, defeated No. 23 Daniel Herrera, 5-3, and teammate and classmate Chase Kranitz (Norwin) scored a 10-4 decision at 184, but the Panthers fell to Iowa State, 23-14.

Saint Vincent: Freshman Nathan Barkley (Derry) was named the PAC Newcomer of the Week for the second time in a row.

A 174-pounder, Barkley recorded a pin in 3 minutes, 20 seconds in the Bearcats’24-19 loss to Washington & Jefferson.

Women’s track and field

Duquesne: Senior Hannah Seitzinger (Belle Vernon) helped the 1,600-meter relay team take first place in a time of 3 minutes, 44.25 seconds at the Jud Logan Giver Memorial in Ashland, Ohio.

She also won the 400-meter dash in a career-best time of 55.17 seconds, the second-fastest time in program history.

Michigan: Sophomore Liz Tapper (Hempfield) broke the program shot put record for the fourth straight week, this time throwing 17.7 meters at the Michigan Invitational.

Football

Transfer portal: Junior lineman Matt Metrosky (Greensburg Central Catholic) has a couple of Division I choices since entering last month into the database.

The Citadel is interested in the 6-foot-1, 295-pounder who was on the team at Pitt for four years as a walk-on.

Baseball

Patrick & Henry: Sophomore Dylan Grabowski (Penn-Trafford) was named the JBB Junior College Baseball Hitter of the Week as he hit .417 with a home run, triple, double and a 1.500 OPS over four games.

For good measure, he tossed six shutout innings, with seven strikeouts, and earned a win.

Hockey

Saint Vincent: Sophomore Tyler Shigo (Norwin) was leading the Bearcats in scoring with 27 points, on eight goals and 19 assists.

Three others had at least 20 points: Alex Schall (Latrobe) with 13 goals and 10 assists for 23 points, Zach Ridilla (Hempfield) with nine goals and 14 assists (23 points) and Zach Motil with 13 goals and six assists (20 points).

SVC, a national tournament qualifier last season, had a 10-1-2 record and was tied atop the College Hockey East M3 standings with Cal (Pa.) and Pitt-Johnstown with 31 points.

Women’s bowling

Saint Vincent: Senior Sabine Strickland was named the AMCC Bowler of the Week.

She was the MVP at the Pitt-Greensburg Bobcat Baker Classic, posting a 194 average with a 223 game average, including 191 in baker play.

The Bearcats (40-11, 13-1) secured the No. 1 seed at the AMCC tournament next month with a strong performance at the AMCC Round Robin in Greensburg.

SVC earned wins over Hilbert, Pitt-Bradford, Alvernia, Penn State Behrend, La Roche and Pitt-Greensburg and lost to reigning conference champ William Smith.
