Westmoreland County campus clippings: Seton Hill's Jaylen McDuffie declares for NFL Draft
Jaylen McDuffie, the king of tackles at Seton Hill, is aiming big.
One of the top linebackers in NCAA Division II, McDuffie announced he is declaring for the NFL Draft.
The redshirt senior, collected a number of postseason honors.
He was a Don Hansen Division II All-American, made the D2Football.com Elite 100 First Team, was a finalist for the Cliff Harris Award and was named the PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Year.
The 6-foot-2, 235-pound McDuffie, the career tackles leader (363), had 118 tackles, including a conference-best 21 for loss and 11 sacks.
Men’s volleyball
Penn State: Senior opposite hitter John Kerr (Derry) helped lead the fourth-ranked Nittany Lions to a 3-1 victory over No. 5 Pepperdine.
Kerr hit 42.1% and posted 20 kills as Penn State moved to 5-0.
Saint Vincent: Senior Matthew Minkin recorded a match-high 16 kills and added 11 digs, freshman Zebediah Wyant added 15 kills and nine digs, and freshman Shawn McSwiggen had 14 kills as Saint Vincent won its season opener in comeback fashion, 3-2 against Carlow.
Men’s basketball
Saint Vincent: Five Bearcats scored in double figures in a 73-58 victory over Westminster. Junior Osyon Jones and sophomore Mike Iuzzolino led the way with 16 points each, freshman Jaden Gales added 14, grad student Shemar Bennett 12 and junior Taylor McNeal 10.
SVC moved to 10-7 overall and 6-6 in the PAC.
Gales, who also grabbed 11 rebounds, was named the PAC Rookie of the Week. He added 24 points and six rebounds against Grove City.
Seton Hill: Senior guard Samuel Tabe scored 30 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to lead the Griffins (11-6, 6-5) to their fifth straight win, 90-61 over Bloomsburg.
West Liberty: Junior Bryce Butler (Latrobe) had 25 points, nine rebounds and four assists, but the No. 15 Hilltoppers were upset by Wheeling, 114-107.
Women’s basketball
Chatham: Freshman Alyssa Laukus (Norwin) had a season-high 19 points to go with four rebounds and three steals in a 100-57 victory over Geneva.
The 5-foot-11 forward made all seven of her free throws.
Grove City: Senior guard Megan Kallock (Greensburg Salem) erupted for a career-high 35 points in a 95-85 win over Geneva.
The scoring mark is a Grove City record for a PAC game that did not go to overtime.
Sophomore guard Mara Polczynski (Norwin) added 13 points, five assists and four steals in the win.
Pitt-Greensburg: Senior Sidney McCully had 27 points, 12 rebounds and five steals, and sophomore Melina Maietta (Greensburg Central Catholic) added 18 points and seven assists as the Bobcats defeated Pitt-Bradford, 71-55.
Saint Vincent: The Bearcats (13-3, 11-2) ran past Westminster for their ninth straight victory as sophomore Emily Thompson scored a game-high 21 points in a 63-48 win.
Her teammate, meantime, was lauded by the conference. Freshman Madison Weber was named the PAC Rookie of the Week after averaging 15 points amd 8.5 rebounds over two wins, including a game-hugh 22 points against Grove City.
Seton Hill: Grad student Alie Seto and junior Sakeira Haralson recorded double-doubles — Seto with 21 points and 10 rebounds and Haralson with 12 points and 12 rebounds — and junior Christiane Frye scored 15 to pace the Griffins past Bloomsburg, 74-50, in PSAC action.
The Griffins (13-7, 6-5) have won four of five.
Slippery Rock: Redshirt sophomore Bella Long (Penn-Trafford) had 11 points off the bench, including three 3-pointers, but the Rock fell to Edinboro, 67-63, in a PSAC game.
Westmoreland County Community College: Freshman forward Mercedes Majors (Monessen) had 22 points and 11 rebounds to power the Wolfpack to a 51-46 victory over Community College of Beaver County.
Sophomore Chloe Willochell (Latrobe) added 10 points, six steals and six rebounds, and sophomore guard Angel Kelly (Franklin Regional) chipped in 11 points and nine rebounds as WCCC improved to 3-9 for the season.
Men’s indoor track & field
Westminster: Senior Ryan Beard (Franklin Regional) finished ninth in the 60-meter dash with a personal-best time of 7.17 seconds at the Youngstown State Collegiate Invitational.
Women’s indoor track & field
Arizona: Junior Mackenna Orie (Hempfield) opened the indoor season with a win at the Lumberjack Team Challenge at Arizona. She took the shot put with a throw of 52 feet.
Duquesne: Junior Sadie Wetzel (Latrobe) won the high jump with a mark of 5 feet, 4.25 inches, and junior Emily Brozeski (Norwin) took second in the 60-meter hurdles in a personal-best time of 8.77 seconds, at the Akron Quad meet.
Junior Faith Mucci (Latrobe) also recorded a runner-up finish, finishing the 400 dash in 1:00.11.
Brozeski also was second in the long jump (5.19 meters) and shot put (12.38 meters).
