Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins sign 3 forwards
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins signed three forwards to American Hockey League (AHL) contracts on Monday.
Atley Calvert and Gabe Klassen agreed to two-year contracts while Jack Beck signed a one-year contract.
• The 20-year-old Calvert participated with the Pittsburgh Penguins team in a prospect tournament staged in Buffalo in September as an invitee.
A right-handed shot, Calvert (6-foot, 193 pounds) spent part of the past four seasons with the Moose Jaw Warriors of the Western Hockey League (AHL). Teammates with forward Brayden Yager, the Pittsburgh Penguins’ first-round pick (No. 14 overall) in the 2023 NHL Draft, Calvert was second on Moose Jaw in scoring with 95 points (47 goals, 48 assists) in 68 games. Helping the Warriors win the WHL championship, Calvert added 20 points (eight goals, 12 assists) in 20 postseason games.
• Klassen, 20, spent parts of the past five seasons with the WHL’s Portland Winterhawks under the guidance of former Penguins coach Mike Johnston.
Serving as Portland’s captain for the past two seasons, the left-handed Klassen (5-10, 178 pounds) led that team in scoring this season with 106 points (35 goals, 71 assists).
Klassen has previously skated in training camps or prospect tournaments for NHL teams, including the Arizona Coyotes, Carolina Hurricanes and Colorado Avalanche.
• Beck, 21, was a sixth-round pick (No. 168 overall) of the Calgary Flames in 2021 but never signed with that team.
A left-handed shot, Beck (6-0, 180 pounds) spent this season with the Ontario Hockey League’s (OHL) Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds and led that squad in scoring with 85 points (27 goals, 58 assists).
